Does headache increase blood pressure

Patients with active headaches may well have high blood pressure. Of course, the physical stress of a headache and any associated pain is an obvious cause of high blood pressure. In these cases, the blood pressure is expected to return to baseline levels once the headache has subsided.

Pheochromocytoma is a rare tumor and a rare cause of uncontrolled very high blood pressure. The classic triad of things associated with pheochromocytoma is episodic headaches, palpitations, and sweating. The headaches are typically associated with palpitations, sweating, and anxiety. These symptoms, along with the markedly elevated blood pressure are due to hormones / biochemical substances produced by the tumor. The diagnosis is typically made with blood tests.

High blood pressure crisis is known as a hypertensive crisis. This is typically defined as blood pressure greater than 180 systolic (top number) and 120 diastolic (bottom number). This is typically a severe uncontrolled episode in patients that usually have a history of blood pressure. Many symptoms can be experienced with the presentation of a hypertensive crisis and typically patients will present to the hospital. Headache is one of these symptoms, with others including neurological issues and chest pain. If there is evidence of damage to organs such as the heart, brain, or kidney, patients will typically require admission to an intensive care unit and IV medications to control blood pressure.
