Can stress mess up your mental health?
Stress in itself is not an illness
but when you experience it frequently, it increases the risk of mental health
conditions such as depression, anxiety, psychosis, and substance use problems.
It's normal to feel stressed sometimes, and it can happen over the short- or
long-term. Long-term stress may cause unhealthy behavior.
Stress causes changes in the body
that can range from mild to severe. Symptoms
can be cognitive, physical, emotional, or behavioral. When under stress, your
body’s autonomic nervous system takes control. This system regulates the
function of your internal organs, such as the heart, stomach, and intestines.
Stress serves an important
purpose—it enables us to respond quickly to threats and avoid danger. However,
lengthy exposure to stress may lead to mental health difficulties (for example,
anxiety and depression) or increased physical health problems. no one can avoid
all stress, it can handle in healthy ways that increase the potential for
recovery. Daily exercise produces stress-relieving hormones
that improve your physical and mental health.
